Via Ragotz to the Hörneckele
Duration: 5h 30min
Uphill: 824 m
Start: St. Magdalena (1382 m)
From St. Magdalena (1,382 metres) via the Höfestrasse in a northerly direction across meadows, passing farmhouses, ascend to the Ampfertal Höfe (1,597 metres; if you prefer, you can drive up to this point by car). Walk along the forest path in sweeping serpentines up towards Ast and Pfinnalm until the altitude mark at 2,020 metres. On a right bend, you will find a signpost to the Ragotzalm and the Hörneckele. Follow the newly created path and enjoy the panoramic views across the hills down into the valley. The slopes towards the south are full of berry bushes and give way to a view of the Prags Dolomites. Walk across the Alpine meadows above the Ragotzalm huts (2,014 metres) and follow the marking # 52 to the Hörneckele, a free-standing grass hill (2,127 metres).
Descent: Return via a narrow path, leading in a northerly direction and then turn left (westerly direction) on marking # 52, first following a foot path and then the steeply descending forest road into the Karbach Valley. Cross the stream and take the wide valley path, passing the reservoir, towards the Karbach farmhouse (1,425 metres; snack bar). Finally, about 20 minutes later, take the access road to St. Martin (1,276 metres) from where you can take the bus back to St. Magdalena.
